For the past two years the by-invitation-only Great Optimist Race has been held in Cape Town, and has involved experienced sailors, celebrities and medical survivors sailing for charity and the work of the Little Optimist Trust. But the Covid pandemic meant the postponement of Boatica Cape Town 2020, the traditional race host. Instead of completely cancelling the race, a new, global “Covid-compliant” challenge has been launched.

This year, sailors of any age from across the country and around the world will be able to sign up for The Little Optimist Global Race, and raise funds for charity at the same time.

How to enter

You can race as an individual, corporate, school, charity or team. Challenge your friends, family or competitors to race a boat for charity too.

Each boat races for their chosen charity and The Little Optimist Trust. Funds raised by your Optimist are split 50/50

Sail your dinghy for 1 Hour/ 5km/ 10km or more, on a day you choose over a 10 day holding period, allowing for optimal weather and personal schedules

The Little Optimist Global Race is all about FUN and OPTIMISM! It will also be the major fundraiser for our charity, The Little Optimist Trust, which has seen a significant drop in income due to the Covid 19 pandemic.

Each boat participating in The Little Optimist Global Race will aim to complete 5kms (or more) and aim to raise an average of ZAR3000, $300, €300

Submit your results

Challenge your friends and network to back your boat and sponsor your boat per KM or hour you sail for charity.

Plot and record your voyage via GPS, Strava, photos and video and upload live to our race and social media platforms (FB and Instagram, Race Pages).

Our 2020 Fundraising Goal

Last year, The Little Optimist Trust’s major fundraising event, The Great Optimist Race, raised more than R200 000 for the Trust and other participating charities.

The funds that were allocated to the Trust were used to build and equip our brick-and-mortar sailing academy, housed at Zeekoevlei Yacht Club. The academy will be the base for our work with disadvantaged children, which includes sailing therapy days.

In 2020/2021 we aim to take the work of our sailing academy a step further. The funds raised by The Little Optimist Global Race 2020 for the Trust will be used to cover the costs for 50 children to attend our sailing academy.
